Science City activities at Maker Faire offer family fun

Take a look at the events taking place in Science City at Maker Faire:

Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30 at 11 a.m.
Steve Trash
Maze Park
Steve Trash will share his passion for upcycling and reusing in a very magical way. As a young kid in Alabama – thanks to a discarded Velvet Elvis Painting – he grasped the value of things others discarded early on. Steve will incorporate the art, magic, music, and other cool stuff out of “found objects” he makes in his performance.

Saturday, June 29 at noon and 4 p.m.
Voler: Thieves of Flight Performance
Maze Park
Aerial artistry has come of age and is presented by this group with grace and daring. Suspended by fabric above Maze Park in Science City, they move to music and create a scene that is both breathtaking and beautiful. Images of suspension and soaring, struggle and success, are artfully created in each of their shows.

Saturday, June 29 at 1 p.m.
Force & Motion Science Show
Maze Park
Kansas City’s Science Center, Science City, invites you to explore the often invisible, yet amazing, forces of physics! The concepts of gravity, centripetal force, energy and collision are explained using bouncing basketballs, spinning wheels and upside down water glasses with this interactive show.

Saturday, June 29 at 2 p.m.
City Construction Project
Maker Studio
Young Makers unite! The Engineers of Science City need your assistance. Help other young Makers build an entire city within the science center’s new Maker Studio. We supply the building materials and opportunity for fun; you supply the creativity and problem solving! Join us for the craziest construction project of the summer!

Saturday, June 29 at 3 p.m.
Flames, Smoke & Sizzle Science Show
Maze Park
Science City is THE place for sizzling science fun! Experience the science of combustion in this super-hot and enlightening demonstration. Observe the effect of heat on different substances in these controlled explosions. Important fire safety practices are exercised during this performance.

Saturday, June 29 at 5 p.m.
Young Maker Showcase featuring Super Awesome Sylvia and Joey Hudy
Maze Park
President Barack Obama helped young maker Joey Hudy fire his ”Extreme Marshmallow Cannon” at the 2012 White House Science Fair. Joey has not only met the president, but he has also won numerous engineering awards and started his own business, and this year Business Insider named Joey one of the 10 smartest kids in the world. At Maker Faire: Kansas City, Joey will show off his LED Arduino Shields.

How many people can say they have met President Barack Obama, presented at a TEDx Conference and medaled at Robogames? Sylvia Todd is only 11 years old, but she has accomplished all that and more. Sylvia’s fame began with her YouTube series, “Sylvia’s Super-Awesome Maker Show!” for MAKE Magazine. The episodes feature Sylvia demonstrating how to make projects from screen printing to paper rockets and have more than 1.5 million views. Don’t miss Sylvia’s demonstrations of her WaterColorBot at Maker Faire: Kansas City.

Saturday, June 29 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, June 30 at 4 p.m.
Rocket Launches
Maze Park
3-2-1- Blast Off! What young Maker hasn’t dreamt of building and launching his/her own rocket? Science City educators will assist in making that dream a reality during Maker Faire! Meet us in the science center for a fun and interactive rocket making and launching experience that you won’t soon forget.

Sunday, June 30 at noon
Radical Reactions Science Show
Maze Park
Ever wonder what exactly is happening during chemical and physical reactions? Well, here is your chance to learn! Watch as the Science City team demonstrates how the properties of everyday materials become the reasons for some extraordinary results.

Sunday, June 30 at 1 to 3 p.m.
Radio Disney
Maze Park
Celebrate your inner inventor with the Road Crew from Radio Disney AM 1190! Join in the fun as Science City ROCKS to your favorite family-friendly tunes that encourage dancing, creating, building, crafting and inventing. Prize packs will be drawn every 30 minutes and the “Inventor of the Day” will win a fabulous grand prize pack at the end of the day. All future inventors are invited to join in the magic and fun!
