Can you imagine music made by lightning bolts? ArcAttack, a music group from Austin, Texas, has mastered the use of Tesla coils to produce energized sound. Since 2005, the group has used Tesla coil technology to produce music and has appeared on “America’s Got Talent” and Maker Faire stages across the country. The group uses a specially designed keyboard to control the coils and the sounds they make. Expect to see the coils in action, producing 10-foot bolts of lightning and outputting 600,000V of energy. Sparks are sure to fly during this can’t-miss performance.

PowerWheels Racing
Races Saturday and Sunday—check booth for race times
Held in front of Union Station
Power Racers is not just a performance but is also a traveling racing series. Teams across the country create electric racecars out of kid’s power wheels cars. The small teams are challenged to create a car on a budget of $500. Fans can expect fierce competition on a track that will showcase cars with the best handling that can maneuver tight corners, according to the Power Racers’ website. The series aims to inspire the design of electric, standard-size cars of the future.

EepyBird is a group of self-described “mad scientists” that provide “entertainment for the curious mind.” EepyBird became an Internet sensation in 2006 when their video “Extreme Diet Coke & Mentos Experiments” went viral. More than 100 two-litter Diet Coke and 500 Mentos were used to create a choreographed video of Diet Coke geysers. The group has since appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “Ellen,” “The Today Show,” and “Mythbusters,” and has performed around the world. In addition to the Coke and Mentos experiments that made them famous, EepyBird experiments with everyday items such as sticky notes and shampoo and encourages curious minds to try their experiments at home.

MAKEwithMOTO is a traveling interactive display and mobile hacker space from Motorola dedicated to “the inner maker in all of us.” The MAKEwithMOTO area features cutting-edge prototyping tools including 3D printers, laser cutters, soldering stations and more. Get in touch with your maker skills and explore creation possibilities.

Lowrider Car and Truck Show
All day Saturday and Sunday
Hopping competition Sunday, 3 p.m.
In front of Union Station
Between 75 and 100 lowrider cars will be on display as part of the Lowrider Car and Truck Show at Union Station. All attendees can vote for their favorite car in 14 different categories. The car hopping contest on Sunday at 3 p.m. is a can’t-miss event. See the cars for yourself and enjoy music and entertainment at this display.

Steve Trash

Steve Trash’s has a passion for the environment and for educating others about environmental issues. As an illusionist, eco-entertainer, kid comedian, and environmental educator, Steve Trash has worked for nearly 30 years teaching kids and adults alike that, “You have real green magic inside, don’t forget to use it.” More than 20 million kids have seen Steve Trash perform around the world, and he has been featured on shows such as “CBS This Morning” and in publications including The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times.

Voler: Thieves of Flight

Aerial dance and acrobatics combine in every Voler – Thieves of Flight performance. Voler performs make up Kansas City’s Premier Aerial Academy and Aerial Performance Collective. Performers are trained in a wide variety of disciplines, from fire spinning to ballet to offer an unforgettable show. The academy also offers courses for a wide range of age and ability groups. The academy was awarded the Best Fitness Class Pitch Award in 2008.

Kansas City Juggling
Noon to 4 p.m.
Maze Park
Kansas City juggling is the area’s premier juggling club and performance group. See tricks of all kinds and learn a thing or two at this engaging performance.

Kansas City Dagorhir Realms
All day
In front of Union Station
The game and sport of Dagorhir was founded in 1977 and inspired by J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings book series. Participants combine simulated combat with role playing in each Dagorhir events. Join Kansas City Dagorhir Realms for fantasy and fun.

FIRST Robotics and Roving Robots Competition Demonstrations
Saturday and Sunday, all day demonstrations
Grand Hall
FIRST Robotics engages high school students in engineering and technology through its robotic challenges and competitions. FIRST Robotics teams from the Greater Kansas City area will demonstrate their robot creations and compete against one another for an exciting display.

Michaels Store Craft Truck
Saturday and Sunday, all day activities
In front of Union Station
Kansas City is the next stop for the Michaels Arts & Crafts mobile tour. The tour will be traveling to Maker Faire in a double-expandable semi-truck tour vehicle. Enthusiastic staff from local Michaels stores will facilitate free craft activities for kids and adults. Take a break from the summer heat, and make crafted creations in the trailer.

U.S. Army
Saturday and Sunday, all day activities
In front of Union Station
See an Army Humvee and find out more about U.S. Army technology in these all day events. Also enjoy  gaming station activities.

Noon to 3 p.m.
In front of Union Station
The Kansas City Zoo brings a mini-zoo experience to Maker Faire with its ZooMobile. See slides, animal artifacts and live animals, and learn more about the zoo and conservation.
